For most of my life, I have been so hard on myself and critical of the way I looked. I learned to shape myself to fit into a box, and it took 22 years before I realised that hating myself didn't make me feel more beautiful. I learned that the only thing that would make me feel beautiful was accepting myI learnt that in every dictionary, there is a different name beneath the definition of ‘beauty’.

One of the most beautiful little girls I know told me that she didn't like her forehead and was insecure. Mind you, her eyelashes are every girl's dream, she has the most beautiful soul and heart, a plethora of friends and the most angelic soul.

And I saw myself in her, the girl that everyone called beautiful but who didn't believe it herself.

And I wanted to tell her that I hope she never goes through what I went through before she finally loves herself in the way that everybody around her loves her. I wanted to tell her that the most beautiful thing about a person is their heart. Because in life, there will always be somebody more conventionally beautiful than you, there will always be someone who is your type, and another who isn't, and there will always be somebody who wishes they looked like you, but who you wish you looked like. But in life, your kindness cannot be compared. In life, kindness can never reach its peak; you can always be more kind, more patient, more loving, more giving, and more accepting. And when you have a heart like that, you radiate, you glow, and you inspire. A kind heart makes everybody beautiful. And whilst this little girl is so beyond pretty, it is her heart that brings that out. I wanted to tell her what I never knew about myself; that you will always be enough if you are enough for yourself. The moment you stop saying these unkind things to yourself is the moment you can learn to love everything about yourself, and not just the way you look, but the way you make others smile, your laugh, your silliness, your happiness and your sensitivity.

The definition of beauty is having the energy to dance, having the freedom to get ice cream after dinner, having a love that makes you giddy, having a soul that brings others peace, and having a joy that allows you to breathe. The definition of beauty is being secure; saying something kind to yourself in the mirror, being confident enough to ask the person you like out, being motivated enough to take care of your body, and being wise enough to know that at the end of the day, nobody will care about the way you looked, but rather the memories you have made. Beauty is not what you don't have or what somebody else has. Beauty is not a competition. Beauty is not having something bigger than somebody else or smaller than somebody else. Beauty is not a critique. Beauty is not a weight, a shape, or a size,
